Error: Service Required – What does it mean?

The error “Service Required” is the standard error given by many Epson inkjet printers when the waste pads in the printer have reached a point where the pads need to be checked and/or replaced.

Variations on this error message include:

  • Parts inside your printer have reached the end of their service life
  • Waste ink pad saturated, see your epson dealer

PaP: Installation instructions unavailable

Installation instructions not available

The printer model you selected (via Pick-a-Potty) is not supported with installation instructions.

While it’s possible that instructions may be provided in the future, such support is not planned for this particular printer model

This could be for a number of different reasons but usually it is due to considerations such as:

  • Printer design makes a waste kit installation impractical
  • Age and lack of interest/availability for this printer

Please Note:

If you are particularly keen to get this printer documented or just wish to get further clarification as to why this printer is not supported please contact us and we’ll be happy to discuss it further.

PaP: Can I reset a printer with error/lights flashing?

If your printer is recognised by your computer and the lights are flashing or an error indicates that the printer needs to have its waste counter reset then YES, you can reset the waste counter even while the printer is otherwise unresponsive to print jobs.

What are waste ink pads?

Waste ink pads are basically a form of nappy (diaper) for inkjet printers.

Every time your printer has a new ink cartridge, runs a maintenance routine or you run the printhead cleaning function, the printer dumps ink into these pads.

Naturally the capacity of these pads is limited so the printer protects you by flashing up the “Service Required” error and blocks further printing operations, etc.

What is a Printer Potty?

A Printer Potty is basically an external waste ink collection kit that comprises of a collection tank and a tube connector. The kit redirects all waste ink generated via the printers internal pump system into the external tank and makes it easy to dispose of, without needing to disassemble, lift or otherwise the disturb the printer.
